Archbishop Hosam Naoum, the Anglican Archbishop in Jerusalem, presided over the Eucharist at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in Boston in the State of Massachusetts, on the morning of the twenty-first Sunday after Pentacost (the twentieth Sunday after Trinity)
on October 17th, 2021. Also present in the service were the Very Rev’d Amy McCreath, the Dean of the Cathedral, Rev’d Canon Don Binder, the Chaplain of the Archbishop, and other clergy from the Cathedral.
During the service Dean McCreath welcomed Bishop Naoum, and presented him with some gifts, and announced that the collection from the service will be a donation to the Diocese of Jerusalem. Bishop Naoum preached on the Gospel reading of the day (Mark 10: 35- 45), concentrating on the meaning of ministry according to Jesus’s teachings in the text. He explained that through this text we discover that the Apostles James and John, as well as the rest of the disciples, did not understand the true meaning of the teachings of Christ, who said that he “came not be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many (Mark. 45, NRSV).” The disciples were influenced by the thinking by the way of the world not the way of God.
Bishop Naoum shared with the congregation an image of the shepherd that he had heard from Archbishop Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, when they met in Egypt last week for the inauguration service for the Province of Alexandria, who had heard it from Pope Francis in a private meeting: a shepherd walks before the sheep to select the best path for the sheep, and walks amongst them so that they can recognise his voice and he can hear them, and behind the sheep so that he can make sure no one is left behind. Bishop Naoum explained, “this image depicts the meaning of leading and serving at the same time, and it reflects the life of Jesus himself, who was the Good Shepherd and the faithful servant. Jesus walked in front of the people to lead, and amongst them to hear and provide for their needs, and at behind them to help those who are struggling. We have to strive to follow Jesus’s example, as individuals and as communities.” In his sermon, Bishop Naoum also talked about the Christian presence in the Holy Land, clarifying that we are at the moment less than 2% of the population, however, we still have an impact on the community through our institutions that serve all. The Diocese of Jerusalem’s institutions include: schools, hospitals, clinics, homes for the elderly, rehabilitation centres, and guest houses,” and that is why we spend a lot of time fundraising, so that we can support all these institutions, and the families in need in our parishes.” Bishop Naoum pointed out the important role the Anglican Episcopal Church has in building bridges between people of different faiths, and the different Churches and that is because they are trusted by all.
At the end, Bishop Naoum offered his gratitude to the American Friends of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, and all the supporters and partners in ministry. He said, “I hope you will be able to visit us in Jerusalem, we will be delighted to welcome you there, and we will introduce to the living stones, your brothers and sisters in the kingdom. Always know that you are in our prayers, as we thank God for your continued support to the ministry in the Land where our Lord had lived and sacrificed himself so that we might have a better life in this world and an eternal life in the world to come.”
This service concluded Bishop Naoum’s first visit to the USA after his installation.
رئيس الأساقفة حسام نعوم يترأس قداس الأحد ويعظ في كاتدرائية القديس بولس الأسقفية في بوسطن، يوم الأحد ١٧/ ١٠/ ٢٠٢١
ترأس رئيس الأساقفة الأنچليكاني في القدس المطران حسام نعوم خدمة الشركة المقدسة في كاتدرائية القديس بولس الأسقفية في بوسطن بولاية ماسيتشوستس صباح يوم الأحد الحادي والعشرين بعد العنصرة (الأحد العشرون بعد عيد الثالوث) بتاريخ ١٧/ ١٠/ ٢٠٢١، مع عميد الكاتدرائية القسيسة ايمي ماكريث وبحضور القس الكنن دونالد بيندر مرافق المطران وفريق رعاة الكاتدرائية.
خلال خدمة القداس رحّبت القسيسة ماكريث بالمطران نعوم وقدّمت له بعض الهدايا الرمزية التذكارية، وأعلنت للمصلّين بأن عطايا القداس ستكون تقدمة لأبرشية القدس الأسقفية. كما وقدم المطران نعوم عظة المنبر التي تمحورت حول مفهوم الخدمة حسب تعليم الرّب يسوع المسيح في إنجيل مرقس (10: 35-45)، من خلال هذا النص الإنجيلي نكتشف أنّ الرسولَين الأخوين يعقوب ويوحنا كما باقي الرسل لم يدركوا بعد رسالة المعلم الحقيقية للخدمة والعطاء، الذي قال أنّه لم يأتِ ليُخدَم بل ليَخدِم ويبذل نفسه فديةً عن كثيرين. كانوا يفكرون بطريقة العالم وليس بطريقة الله.
شارك المطران نعوم عن لقائه مع رئيس أساقفة كانتربري جاستن ويلبي في مصر بمناسبة حفل تدشين إقليم الاسكندرية وذلك قبل سفره إلى الولايات المتحدة، وبدوره كان قد تحدث المطران ويلبي عن صورة الراعي والخراف التي سمعها في حديثه الخاص مع قداسة البابا فرنسيس في روما قبلها بيومين: إنّ الراعي يرافق الخراف في الأمام حتى يرى ويختار الطريق الخضراء والمناسبة أكثر، وفي وسطهم حتّى يعرفوا صوته وهو يسمعهم، وفي الخلف حتّى لا يُترك أحد وينفصل عن القطيع، حيث الحركة البطيئة للمناضلين. وأضاف المطران نعوم قائلاً: “إنّ هذه الصورة القويّة هي صورة رائعة عن القيادة والخدمة معاً، وتعكس حياة يسوع نفسه، الراعي الصالح والخادم الأمين. كان يسوع في الأمام ليقود، وكان أيضاً في وسط الناس ليسمع ويلبّي احتياجاتهم، وكذلك في الخلف ليتعامل ويساند المناضلين في تحدياتهم. علينا أن نسعى في أن نتبع هذا المثال في القيادة والخدمة كأفراد وكجماعات”. وتحدث في عظته أيضاً عن وضع المسيحيين في الأرض المقدسة وعن نسبة الوجود التي تقلّ عن %2 من السكان، وبالرغم من ذلك هنالك تأثير كبير بفضل الالتزام في خدمة كلّ المجتمع، من خلال مؤسسات أبرشية القدس: المدارس، المستشفيات، العيادات، بيوت المسنّين، مراكز التأهيل، بيوت الضيافة. “لهذا نقضي وقتاً طويلاً في تجنيد الأموال من أجل تسديد احتياجات المؤسسات والعائلات المحتاجة في الرعايا”. وأشاد بدور الكنيسة الأنچليكانية الأسقفية في بناء الجسور بين الديانات، وبين جميع الكنائس وذلك لأنها تتمتّع بثقة الجميع.
في الختام قدّم المطران نعوم الشكر وعرفان الجميل لجميع الأصدقاء الأمريكان والداعمين الشركاء في الإنجيل. وقال: “أتمنّى أن تتمكّنوا في زيارتنا في القدس، سنكون سعداء في استقبالكم، وسنعرّفكم على الحجارة الحيّة، رفاقكم في الملكوت. اعلموا أنّكم في صلواتنا التي نرفعها شاكرين الله من أجل محبتكم المستمرة ودعمكم الدائم لخدمتنا ورسالتنا في الأرض التي عاش وخدم فيها الرّب وبذل حياته من أجل أن يمنحنا حياة أفضل في هذا العالم وحياة أبدية في العالم الآتي”.
كان هذا القداس الالهي ختاماً لاجتماعات المطران نعوم وزيارته الأولى للولايات المتحدة الأمريكية بعد تنصيبه.
