Thanksgiving (Harvest) Sunday–3 October, 2021
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
(1 Thessalonians 5:18, NRSV)
Grace and peace to you all, Sisters and Brothers in Christ!
We have just had a new year filled with blessings and gifts from our Heavenly Father. Yet we have also had many challenges throughout this past year and have endured loss and pain. However, the life of Christians who have built their faith in Jesus, the Rock of Ages, is filled with hope even in the midst of pain and suffering. We need to remember always that giving thanks strengthens this hope in our hearts.
The Bible teaches us that being grateful and giving thanks to God is a spiritual and faithful state, a state that we should abide in despite all outward circumstances. Giving thanks to God is not a mere reaction that depends on our state of living. It is rather a life that is based on God’s love for us. And so it is the natural state that both the individual and the Christian community live in. As St. Paul wrote: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18, NRSV)
During these challenging times, many people find themselves wondering what is the meaning of thanksgiving and whether there is anything to be thankful for. This is especially the case with the COVID pandemic and the current economic, political, and social troubles that the world is facing. Moreover, some people have exchanged the idea of thanksgiving for questions and doubts that have weakened their faith and led them to fear the world around them.
By proclaiming the love of God, and through the salvific work of Jesus on the cross, the Church with its clergy and laity have to be a source of hope and bearer of peace to a world filled with anguish and pain. To be able to do that, the Church must pray, work, and serve, so that seeds of hope may be sown in the hearts of all believers. We need to give thanks to God both in our prayers and acts of charity because this is at the core of the ministry we are called to by our Lord Jesus Christ.
Dearly Beloved, as we celebrate Thanksgiving Sunday, let us train ourselves, our churches, our parishes and institutions to be thankful, to be charitable, and to do ministry continuously in the world. By doing so, we will resist conforming to this age with its selfishness and obsession with outward appearances. More than that, we will learn that giving thanks is at the center of our faith and calling, allowing us to make a greater contribution towards living the abundant life.

رسالة أحد الشكر السنوي

“أشكروا في كل شيءٍ لأن هذه هي مشيئة الله في المسيح يسوع من جهتكم”. (1 تسالونيكي 5 : 18)
تحية وسلام ونعمة من لدن رب المجد يسوع لكم جميعاً أيها الأخوات والأخوة،
لقد أنعم الله علينا عاماً جديداً مليئاً بالبركات والهيبات السماوية وأيضاً مررنا بأوقات صعبة وتحديات جمّة تخللها الألم والفقدان. حياة الانسان المؤمن، المؤسسة على صخر الدهور ربنا يسوع المسيح له المجد والتسبيح، رحلة ايمانية يكللها الأمل والرجاء حتى في وسط الألم والمعاناة. وعلينا ألا ننسى أن الشكر يعمّق هذا الأمل ويرسخ في قلوبنا هذا الرجاء.
يعلمنا الكتاب المقدس أن الشكر والحمد والعرفان ينبغي أن يكون حالة ايمانية وروحية في كافة الظروف وفي كل الأحيان، ليس الشكر ردة فعل أو حالة عاطفية يحكمها الظرف أو الزمان والمكان، انما هو حياة جوهرها محبة الله لنا وبالتالي طبيعة روحية يعيشها الفرد والجماعة المسيحية في عطاء لا ينضب ولا يضمحل. وكما كتب بولس الرسول : “شاكرين كل حين على كل شيء في اسم ربنا يسوع المسيح …” (أفسس 5 : 20).
يسأل العديد من الناس في هذهِ الأيام الصعبة عن ماهية الشكر وهل هنالك ما نشكر من أجله خاصة في ضوء جائحة كورونا والأوضاع الاجماعية والسياسية والاقتصادية الاستثنائية التي تمر بها منطقتنا بل وعالمنا. كما وأن بعض الناس استبدلوا الشكر بتساؤلات حقيقية وصعبة زعزعت ايمانهم واكثرت شكواهم وبالتالي تخوفهم من الحاصل والآتي.
الكنيسة بمرسوميها وعلمانيها عليها من خلال شهادتها لمحبة الله وعمل يسوع الخلاص على الصليب أن تكون أداة ورسالة لعالم مليء بالتحديدات والآلم والمعاناة، وذلك من خلال الصلاة والعمل والخدمة لنشر الأمل الحقيقي في قلوب المؤمنين. صلاة الشكر وخدمة العطاء والمحبة هي في صلب مشاركتنا في الخدمة والارسالية التي أوصانا بها الرب يسوع المسيح.
دعونا في هذا العام ومن خلال أحد الشكر السنوي أن ندرّب أنفسنا وكنائسنا على الشكر والعطاء والعمل المستمر حتى لا نشاكل هذا الدهر بمظاهره وماديته وأنانيته، بل أن نتعلم كيف أن الشكر والعطاء في جوهر ايماننا ورسالتنا السماوية لتُحدِثَ التغيير نحو حياة أفضل. مع صاحب الترنيمة نصلي مرنمين :
نشكر كل حين الهنا الأمين من أنعم بالفداء الثمين
