International Ecumenical Youth Meeting Lebanon 2019

The righteous shall grow like a Cedar of Lebanon

Between 22nd and 26th March, 1600 young Christians from around the Middle East and further afield came together to pray, worship and learn together at the Taize International Ecumenical Youth Meeting in Beirut.

A total of 11 young Anglicans from parishes in Palestine and Jordan participated in the event, living with host families, and joining with local congregations from across the Christian traditions of the Middle East to pray, silently contemplate and verbally discuss our shared faith.

All Saints Anglican Church was one of the host congregations, and the location for two workshops on the Bible and on developing interfaith relationships. Rev’d Imad Zoorob and the pastorate committee were incredibly generous and hospitable hosts for those at the workshops.

Each day all 1600 participants joined together at the Seaside Arena to pray and worship together, using the unique Taize form of chanting, repeating short phrases of praise over and over, in a wide variety of languages, including Arabic for the first time. It was an incredible privilege to join in one song with such a large gathering of young Christians from across the region, and I hope it will lead to the encouragement and development of our youth people’s faith and relationships with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

The final day of the gathering included a shared interfaith activity in commemoration of the Virgin Mary (as the day fell on the feast of the annunciation). At a point in time where the global narrative of Christian-Muslim relationships is so often negative, it was great to participate in something that rejected conflict in favour of understanding and mutual respect. As Christians, we are called to share good news, and this gathering certainly was that.
