Archbishop Suheil Participates in a Service for Christians in the Middle East at Westminster Abbey.

On Tuesday, December 4th, Archbishop Suheil Dawani joined with a large ecumenical assembly of Middle Eastern prelates at Westminster Abbey for "A Service to Celebrate the Contribution of Christians in the Middle East." The service began with reflections by Prince Charles, who said, "[I have met] many Christians who, with such inspiring faith and courage, are battling oppression and persecution, or who have fled to escape it. Time and again, I have been deeply humbled and profoundly moved by the extraordinary grace and capacity for forgiveness that I have seen in those who have suffered so much."

Speaking in Arabic, Archbishop Suheil later offered a reading from St. Luke's Gospel, which, in part, quoted Jesus' words, "No one after lighting a lamp hides it under a jar, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light." Among the several other reflections and addresses that followed was one by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, who warned of the extreme difficulties being faced by Christians and other minorities in the Middle East: ''To live in a country, or a society where a government, or an armed group, or even a minority of people, consider that you should be consigned to oblivion because of your faith in Christ is an experience without parallel."

The service continued with prayers for peace and reconciliation between peoples of different faiths, as well as chants from The Choir of the Syriac Orthodox Church in London, before ending with a closing prayer and blessing.
