Dr Oliver Bogler and Dr Danna Kurtin of MD Anderson visit to Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza
On 7th March 2017, Archbishop Suheil visited Al Ahli Arab Hospital, Gaza to introduce Dr Oliver Bogler and Dr Danna Kurtin of MD Anderson to its director Suhaila Tarazi and staff members to facilitate discussions as to how the hospital can treat cancer patients. Dr Bogler and Dr Kurtin also met leading faculty members and were briefed on cancer in Gaza. There are 2 million people in the Gaza strip with cancer incidence currently identified at 80-85% per 100,000 individuals. Gazans needing radiography treatment need to travel to Jerusalem, and sadly such travel is extremely difficult. Already Al Ahli Arab Hospital can diagnose certain cancers, including breast cancer, but it lacks treatment facilities. The briefing noted that 1600 new cancer patients are identified per annum. It is anticipated that more will be identified as the population is educated about cancer. In Gaza, for women, breast cancer is most prevalent, and for men, colorectum. Accompanying the Archbishop and MD Anderson were: Dr Hisham Nassar, Canon John Peterson, Canon Nicholas Porter, Stuart kensinger, Ghassan Isaac and Canon David Longe.
